President-elect Trump warned Putin against escalating the Ukraine war and signaled interest in pursuing a diplomatic resolution.
President-elect Donald Trump reportedly warned Russian President Vladimir Putin last Thursday not to escalate the ongoing war in Ukraine, stressing the substantial U.S. military presence in Europe as a deterrent. The Washington Post reported multiple sources confirming that Trump and Putin discussed Ukraine shortly after Trump’s election victory, with the president-elect expressing interest in facilitating peace in the region.
According to a source familiar with the call, Trump emphasized to Putin the United States’ commitment to a stable Europe and highlighted the military deterrent provided by American forces stationed in Europe. Trump reportedly reiterated his desire for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and suggested further discussions aimed at ending the war soon.
Throughout his 2024 campaign, Trump pledged to bring a swift end to the war between Russia and Ukraine if elected. Sources told The Washington Post that Ukrainian officials were aware of Trump’s call with Putin and did not express objections, understanding Trump’s plans to explore diplomatic discussions with Russia.
In addition to his conversation with Putin, Trump told NBC News that he had spoken with approximately 70 world leaders following his election, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Washington Post reported that Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a Trump supporter, joined Trump’s call with Zelensky to discuss potential steps toward peace.
When asked about the call with Putin, Trump’s communications director Steven Cheung told Fox News, “We do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders. President Trump won a historic election decisively, and leaders from around the world know America will return to prominence on the world stage. That is why leaders have begun the process of developing stronger relationships with the 45th and 47th President, as he represents global peace and stability.”
Putin reportedly congratulated Trump on his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris and commented on Trump’s resilience, referring to a past attempt on Trump’s life and calling him “a brave man.” The Russian president added that Trump’s campaign statements about restoring U.S.-Russia relations and addressing the Ukrainian crisis deserved consideration as the war continues.
