Newport News Police have released the following statement regarding a shooting at a Virginia elementary school by a 6-year-old.
Updated January 6, 2023, 5:50 p.m.In reference to the investigation below, the suspect has been identified as a 6-year-old male student at Richneck Elementary School. The student is in custody. The victim has been identified as a teacher. The teacher’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The investigation remains ongoing.

Newport News police are on scene of a shooting at Richneck Elementary School. No students were injured in this incident. An adult was taken to a local hospital. The extent of the adult’s injuries is unknown at this time. There is no longer an active shooter. We’re beginning the process to reunite parents with students. More information will be released when it is available.

Mayor Phillip Jones, who officially took over the role of Newport News mayor on Jan. 1 2023, announced he had traveled to the scene, and was coordinating with the Newport New Chief of Police. He also announced plans to hold a press conference soon. However, no new information is expected to be made available while authorities continue to investigate the tragic occurrence.

Newport News is one of seven cities that comprise the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. This area has suffered a plagued of gun violence, as gun homicides in the area hit an all-time high in 2022.
